Long-term sequential deferiprone-deferoxamine versus deferiprone alone for thalassemia major patients: a randomised clinical trial

A multicentre randomized open-label trial was designed to assess the effectiveness of long-term sequential deferiprone–deferoxamine (DFO–DFP) versus DFP alone to treat thalassaemia major (TM). DFP at 75 mg/kg, divided into three oral daily doses, for 4 d/week and DFO by subcutaneous infusion (8–12 h) at 50 mg/kg per day for the remaining 3 d/week was compared with DFP alone at 75 mg/kg, administered 7 d/week during a 5-year follow-up. Standardized T2* map of normal human heart in vivo to correct T2* segmental artefacts.

A segmental, multislice, multi-echo T2* MRI approach could be useful in heart iron-overloaded patients to account for heterogeneous iron distribution, demonstrated by histological studies. However, segmental T2* assessment in heart can be affected by the presence of geometrical and susceptibility artefacts, which can act on different segments in different ways. Preferential patterns of myocardial iron overload by multislice multiecho T2* CMR in thalassemia major patients.

This study aimed to determine if there were preferential patterns of myocardial iron overload in thalassemia major. Five hundred twenty-three thalassemia major patients underwent cardiac MR. Influence of myocardial fibrosis and blood oxygenation on heart T2* values in thalassemia patients

Purpose To determine whether T2* measurements quantifying myocardial iron overload in thalassemia patients are influenced by myocardial fibrosis and blood oxygenation. Materials and Methods Multislice multiecho T2* was performed in 94 thalassemia patients in order to quantify myocardial iron overload. Iron-dependent erythropoiesis in women with excessive menstrual blood losses and women with normal menses

In women of fertile age, iron loss consequent to excessive menstrual discharge is by far the most frequent cause of iron-deficient anemia. However, the relationship between menstrual discharge and iron loss is poorly understood. In this prospective study, total menstrual and iron losses were assayed in a large cohort of non-anemic women and women with excessive menstrual blood losses (menorrhagia) in order to provide data useful for intervention. One hundred and five Caucasian women aged 20–45 years were recruited. Blood cell count and serum ferritin (SF) levels were determined in each case before menses. The effect of applied pressure on the magnetic properties of the Prussian blue analogue K0.4Fe4[Cr(CN)6]2.8 x 16 H2O (1) has been analyzed by dc and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements. Under ambient conditions, 1 orders ferromagnetically at a critical temperature (T(C)) of 18.5 K. Under application of pressure in the 0-1200 MPa range, the magnetization of the material decreases and its critical temperature shifts to lower temperatures, reaching T(C) = 7.5 K at 1200 MPa. Pressure-dependent Raman and Mossbauer spectroscopy measurements show that this striking behavior is due to the isomerization of some Cr(III)-C[triple bond]N-Fe(II) linkages to the Cr(III)-N[triple bond]C-Fe(II) form. A study of the interaction between iron(III)oxide and titanium(IV)oxide at elevated temperatures

Abstract The bulk interaction between iron(III) oxide and titanium(IV) oxide occurs at temperatures in excess of 773 K. Initially iron(III) ions dissolve in the titanium(IV) oxide structure to produce a substitutional solid solution. Magnetic evidence suggests that there is a solubility limit of iron(III) ions in the region of ca. 3 atom %. Significantly the phase transition from the anatase phase to the rutile phase is observed to occur approximately 200 K lower in the presence of iron than when it is absent.
